What Documents You Need to File Your 2024 Taxes

by Nyeem Johnson

Tax season is approaching, and one of the easiest ways to reduce stress—and avoid delays—is making sure you have all your documents ready before you file. Whether you’re an employee, contractor, business owner, or have multiple income sources, these are the most common forms you’ll need to gather.

1. Personal Identification

You will typically need:

  • Social Security Number (or ITIN)

  • Your spouse’s SSN (if filing jointly)

  • SSNs for dependents

Keeping this information organized helps prevent filing errors.

2. Income Documents

Most people will receive one or more of the following:

  • W-2 from employers

  • 1099-NEC for contractor/self-employment income

  • 1099-MISC for miscellaneous income

  • 1099-INT for bank interest

  • 1099-DIV for dividends or investments

  • 1099-K for payment apps (depending on thresholds)

  • 1099-G for unemployment income

  • 1099-R for retirement distributions

If you changed jobs or worked multiple gigs, make sure nothing is missing.

3. Deductions & Credit Documents

Depending on your situation, you may need documentation for:

  • Student loan interest

  • Childcare expenses

  • Education expenses (Form 1098-T)

  • Health insurance (1095-A, 1095-B, or 1095-C)

  • Mortgage interest (Form 1098)

  • Property taxes

  • Charitable contributions

  • Medical expenses (if itemizing)

These documents help determine if you qualify for certain deductions or credits.

4. Self-Employed or Business Documents

If you operate a business, freelance, or do gig work, gather:

  • Profit & loss statements

  • Mileage logs

  • Receipts for business expenses

  • Home office expenses

  • Equipment purchases

  • Software subscriptions

  • Phone & internet usage documentation

Good bookkeeping makes tax filing smoother and helps avoid missed deductions.

5. Last Year’s Tax Return

Having your prior return on hand helps verify information and may speed up processing.

Final Tip:

Create a digital folder on your computer or phone labeled “2024 Taxes” and upload each document as you receive it. Most employers and institutions release forms between January 1 and January 31.

If you're not sure which documents apply to you, that’s normal — every taxpayer is different.
