What Documents You Need to File Your 2024 Taxes

Preparing for tax season is much easier when you know which documents you’ll need before filing. Whether you’re an employee, contractor, or business owner, these are the most common documents to gather for your 2024 tax return.
1. Personal Identification
You’ll typically need:
-
Social Security Numbers for you, spouse, and dependents
-
Last year’s tax return (optional but helpful)
2. Income Forms
Gather all forms that report income, including:
-
W-2 from employers
-
1099-NEC for contractor work
-
1099-MISC for miscellaneous income
-
1099-K for payment apps (if applicable)
-
1099-INT / 1099-DIV for interest or dividends
-
1099-R for retirement income
-
1099-G for unemployment income
3. Expense & Deduction Documents
Depending on your situation, gather records for:
-
Mortgage interest (Form 1098)
-
Student loan interest
-
Charitable contributions
-
Education expenses (1098-T)
-
Childcare expenses
-
Medical expenses (if itemizing)
-
Health insurance forms (1095-A/B/C)
4. Self-Employed Documents
If you have business income:
-
Profit & loss summary
-
Mileage logs
-
Receipts for business expenses
-
Equipment purchases
-
Phone/internet usage documentation
